SAWS tightening enforcement of water restrictions, handing out citations without warning

Officials believe city could face Stage 2 restrictions soon

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Water System is tightening enforcement of water restrictions and letting customers know that the utility will be handing out citations.

The SAWS conservation director wants people to know that watering restrictions are not suggestions. They are city laws that will be enforced.

So far, SAWS has handed out about 500 warnings, and now officers will be giving tickets without any warning if residents are not following the rules.

Under Stage 1, outdoor watering with sprinklers or irrigation systems is allowed only before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m. and only one day per week, which is determined by the last numbers of a resident’s street address.

“What we're looking to be more careful of is that spray irrigation that's attached to a hose or from an irrigation system. If you do that on the wrong day or on the wrong times, you could get a ticket and we don't want that to happen to anybody,” said Karen Guz, SAWS conservation director.

SAWS officials believe the city could be facing Stage 2 water restrictions in the next few weeks, and that has even more restricted hours.

Hand-held hose watering is OK at any time.
