SAWS, UnitedHealthcare to provide water conservation makeovers

Makeovers for 25 homeowners include repairing, replacing key plumbing equipment

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Water System and UnitedHealthcare on Monday launched a partnership to provide free water conservation makeovers for 25 low-income senior citizens.

UnitedHealthcare donated $10,000 to SAWS to replace old or leaking toilets, leaking water pipes and shower heads.

"These smaller homes, their water bills are too high, and for some reason, they just can't bring them down," SAWS CEO and President Robert Puente said. "We investigated it, found out there were some leaks or some problems, and so we're going out there with the help of UnitedHealthcare and fix them."

The residents should see reduced water bills after the repairs, Puente said.

This is the first time that SAWS has received a donation from a private company.

"It gives UnitedHealthcare great privilege to give back to the city of San Antonio and those seniors in need," said UnitedHealthcare Vice President of Business Development Angel Encinas. "We believe that giving back to the community allows us to continue to live our mission of 'helping people live healthier lives.'"

J.R. Plumbing has been contracted to do the water conservation makeovers.
