In a blog post, Gibson said he has begun working with trustees on a transition timeline.

Gibson wrote the following in his blog post:

“This two-year plan will allow a smooth transition and help ensure that work will continue, uninterrupted, for the remainder of 2017-18 and the 2018-19 school year. We have drafted a timeline that integrates elections, key work processes, the superintendent search process and my remaining (Board approved) Areas of Focus.

“It is not a decision my family and I came to lightly. We love SCUC because it is a one-of-a-kind District with the best staff, parents, students and community. But it is important to hand the reins over at a period when the new superintendent will have time to acclimate to the position and work with stakeholders and Trustees going forward. I will be available to assist the new superintendent in the transition, if he or she decides it necessary.

“I have been fortunate to serve as Superintendent for 17 years, the last eight of those here at SCUC. The experiences are exhilarating, and difficult to reproduce in any other profession; but there are other professional and personal goals my family and I would like to undertake, and the timing seems right for them and SCUC.

"We will not coast into retirement. The list on the Areas of Focus is lengthy, and I pledge to work every day to put them into effect. You deserve no less than my best effort, and so will my successor.”
