Seguin church opens doors to victims of Harvey, volunteers rescuing stranded people

SEGUIN, Texas – A Seguin church opened it's doors on Sunday -- but not for it's regularly scheduled church service.

Tim Zapata of Victory Christian Center announced via Facebook live that it's Sunday service would be canceled, but that the church would be open to those seeking refuge from Harvey.

"We just decided to open up the church and help people in need and kind of take a little bit of the stress in their lives out," Zapata said.

Houston experienced catastrophic flooding Saturday night into Sunday morning and Zapata said he anticipates those in Houston may need a place to stay.

"I know there are people coming from Houston, so we have just been going in and out trying to get people so they can have a place to stay and a warm meal."

Zapata and other volunteers are working 12 hour shifts to make sure there is always someone awake to help out. Volunteers are even going out and picking up those who are stranded in the storm.

"We are just gonna stay out here and stay open for people who, if they need to, they know they can always stay here and we have a place here for them," Zapata said.
