Seguin police find new type of gas pump skimmer

Residents urged to take precautions prior to pumping gas

SEGUIN, Texas – The Seguin Police Department recently found a different type of gasoline pump credit card skimmer.

Officer Carlos Contreras said the skimmers were found at two different locations in the city.

Contreras said crooks break into the locked access panel by the keypad area and install a device directly to the pump computer motherboard, where all of the credit card information passes through.

He said the lock access panel at gas pumps should have a state of Texas red seal tape over the seam. If the tape is broken, that's a red flag and consumers shouldn't use the pump.

Contreras said that consumers should check their Bluetooth settings under "other devices" on their cellphone prior to pumping gas.

"If they see a string of numbers or letters that's on the device, there's a high probability that there could be a skimmer attached to that pump or near the area," he said.

Consumers are urged to report strange Bluetooth settings to the store clerk.

Contreras advises consumers to gas up at a pump closest to the store because crooks will usually install skimmers at pumps farthest from the store.

Consumers should also check their credit card statements for suspicious charges.
