Southside ISD, UIW team up for health study

SAN ANTONIO – Southside Independent School District and the University of Incarnate Word have teamed up to take a different approach to studying medicine.

The district said a 2016 study by Metro Health shows people living on the South Side lives are 15 to 20 years shorter than people living on the North Side.

The help find the cause, 30 families from South Side ISD will be part of the two-year study.

Four UIW medical students will be assigned to each family, helping with issues like obesity and diabetes.

"Dementia, Alzheimer’s -- those are some real big ones that I know several families, and just in the community, that people  have had to address the issue and we don't have the information, like I said, to maybe handle the situation better," Adelita Gonzales, a mother of three, said.

The partnership won't just help these families. Organizers also hope the real-life experience will help the medical students become better doctors.
