Students from Sam Houston, Somerset work to build futures in engineering, trades

Sam Houston plays Somerset Friday

SAN ANTONIO – While Fridays in the fall, for many, mean high school football, it is also a chance to use those matchups to head to schools to find out what is happening in the classroom.

On Friday, one of the big games in KSAT12'S Big Game Coverage will have Sam Houston High School visiting Somerset High School.

Sam Houston is looking to build a winner and engineers. They have an engineering magnet program that gets students ready to build their communities.

"It's like, sometimes, you’re not even learning about it, but at the same time, it’s just a really fun experience for everybody," said Mercadez Semmons-Burks, who is a sophomore at Sam Houston.

Semmons-Burks is also involved in water robotics.

Another Sam Houston High School sophomore, Bruce Adams, said he also loves learning about engineering and wants to use his skills to help those in need.

"I would like to build a shelter for people who don't have any homes or anything and just look at it like, 'I built that, and it all started in high school,’” Adams said.

Somerset High School also has students who like to work directly with their hands, building with wood or metal and welding their futures.

"I like working with my hands. I'd rather be in here than in a classroom," said Paul Chavarria, a student who also wants to own his own business.

A classmate, Justin Barnhill, is looking to start a welding business for himself. He is fired up about that future.

Barnhill already has one certificate and plans on getting more during his senior year, then going to a trade school for more experience doing something he loves.

He enjoys, he said, "the manipulation of the metal and being able to work with my hands and build something.”
