Surveillance video shows deadly Laredo shootout

Antonio Gerardo Rodriguez took officer's gun, used it against police

LAREDO, Texas – Surveillance video of a Laredo shootout that left four police officers injured is giving investigators a glimpse at how the suspect was able to disarm one of the officers.

The June 2 shootout occurred as Laredo police tried to arrest 55-year-old murder suspect Antonio Gerardo Rodriguez, who was wanted in his girlfriend’s slaying.

After a day-long manhunt for Rodriguez, Officer Mario Casarez found him in a convenience store parking lot and attempted to arrest him.

The surveillance video shows Rodriguez shooting Casarez with his own handgun. He then disarmed the wounded officer and used that weapon and ammunition on arriving officers.

A total of three police officers were shot; a fourth was injured by glass shrapnel. The injured officers were taken to San Antonio hospitals for treatment.

Investigators said that based on video evidence, they believe Rodriguez may have shot himself during the shootout. He later died on the way to an area hospital.
