El Paso officer shot, wounded while responding to call

EL PASO, Texas – A police officer in El Paso was shot in the lower leg Monday when responding to a distress call at a house, authorities said.

Two officers were responding to a 911 call from a woman who hung up the phone shortly after midnight, police said.

The officers were met with a "hail of gunfire” through the front door and one of them was shot in the leg while retreating. Another off-duty officer who responded was also fired upon, police said.

El Paso police said its officers did not return fire before Alexander Eugene Jeffery, 29, surrendered and was taken into custody.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital for surgery and police did not immediately release his name.
