A KSAT employee noticed one of the scam emails in his spam filter and alerted the Defenders.

"It said it was from E-Z Pass and it had an official-looking logo on it, but it just didn't look right," said KSAT.com's Van Darden.

He deleted it, but others have been duped.

"Dear customer," the email reads, "you have not paid for driving on a toll road."

There's also a link to download the invoice.

The Better Business Bureau's Leah Napoliello said don't click on it.

"Instead of it being a regular invoice, what it actually is is a virus that is able to scan your computer," she said. "Once it's installed, it finds any personal, financial or banking information and then uses that to possibly steal your identity."

The scam email has been reported in Dallas and Houston and up and down the East Coast -- any place there are toll roads.

Texas doesn't even have E-Z Pass. Instead, other collectors like TXTag and EZ Tag are present.

If you think you do owe a toll, contact the toll collector yourself.

This scam is a reminder never to click on email links unless you're sure who sent the message, never send financial information by email and keep your computer security software up to date.
