Trial date set for man accused of starting fire that claimed life of SA firefighter Scott Deem

SAN ANTONIO – A trial date has been set for the man accused of starting the fire that killed firefighter Scott Deem and injured firefighter Brad Phipps on May 18, 2017.

Emond Johnson is set to go to trial Feb. 1, 2019.

The fire happened at the Ingram Square Shopping Center.

Johnson is facing a total of five charges, including murder and arson.

The fire marshal determined Johnson intentionally set the fire at the gym he owned.

Investigators said Johnson was behind on rent and about to lose his lease.
