SAN ANTONIO - The Texas Department of Transportation has launched a new campaign to create awareness and reduces crashes and fatalities in work zones.

The Humans at Work campaign is highlighted as part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, which runs April 3-7.

"When you are behind the wheel, it's very important that you concentrate on your driving, concentrate on what is around you, especially if you're going to be traveling in a work zone," TxDOT representative Laura Lopez said. "Make sure you're following the speed limit. You got distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Just be very familiarized with your surroundings."

TxDOT said work zone crashes increased 15 percent statewide in 2016, resulting in a 27 percent increase in fatalities. They added that there were 2,297 crashes in work zones, with seven fatalities and 30 serious injuries.

The Humans at Work campaign urges drivers to be more attentive and to adhere to posted traffic signs within work zones.
