SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Department of Transportation is kicking off this year's National Work Zone Awareness Week a little early with a big push for drivers to pay attention.
The department was out at the I-35 and Loop 410 construction site and work zone to remind drivers to be on the lookout for workers and equipment.

Work zone crashes increased by 13 percent in Texas last year and killed 138 people.
The top two causes for the crashes were speed and not paying attention.
"Motorists encountering work zones often think of delays. But we are asking motorists to be patient and think caution as they're driving," said Anthony Flores of TxDOT.
Crashes in work zones can be extra expensive as well. Traffic fines double when workers are present.
Officials said drivers can help save lives by slowing down, being aware of what's around them and being extra cautious in construction zones.
National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 11-15.
