SAN ANTONIO – The University of Incarnate Word on Friday voted to opt out of a new state law that allows concealed weapons on college campuses.
The UIW Board of Directors unanimously approved the recommendation, UIW spokewoman Margaret Garcia told KSAT 12 News.

St. Mary's University also plans to ban concealed weapons, university officials told KSAT 12 on Friday (Read letter from president to college community). Texas Christian University and Rice University also plan to opt out.
The new state law goes into effect next August.
Public universities can't opt out of the law, but they can designate "gun-free" zones.
