VIA unveils preferred streetcar route

Route runs 5.9 miles, provides service to 1.4 million riders, costs $280M

SAN ANTONIO – VIA officials on Tuesday presented its recommendation for a preferred downtown streetcar route.

The recommendation, known as Alternative Six, runs 5.9 miles and is expected to service more than 1.4 million riders.

The route, which includes St. Mary's Street between Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Alamo Street, is expected to cost $280 million.

VIA board members will vote on the proposed route Sept. 24.

A public meeting is set for Sept. 18.
