Police surround West Side home, arrest possible shooting suspect

Man suspected of shooting woman in her back

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police surrounded a West Side home with their guns drawn early Thursday morning, then took a man into custody who may be a suspect in a shooting.

The victim is a 37-year-old woman who was brought to Children's Hospital of San Antonio around 4 a.m. Police said the woman had been shot in the back and appeared to be in critical condition. She was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Police said it appeared that the woman was shot as she sat in a car outside a home in the 4400 block of W. Commerce Street. They believe the person who shot her was standing outside the vehicle.

After questioning witnesses, officers determined that the suspect in that shooting may be inside the home. They surrounded it, at one point appearing to shine bright lights into the windows.

A few minutes later, officers led a man out in handcuffs. According to a sergeant at the scene, that man lives in the home and is a "person of interest" who will be questioned in this case. The woman, he said, did not live there.

Police said they also found three children asleep inside the home.

No one else was hurt in the incident. However, one neighbor said officers told him to leave his home for safety reasons while they were working to get the man out of his home.
