Who let the dogs out? SAFD introduces new arson investigator

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department's training academy introduced a new addition Wednesday.

Jenna, a 1-year-old Labrador retriever, just got back from arson dog training sponsored by State Farm.

Both the dog and handler are required to complete 200 hours of training.

The dogs sniff out traces of accelerants, such as gasoline and lighter fluid, which might have been used to start a fire.

But the animals will do more than investigate.

"She's also an ambassador. She'll go out to schools," arson investigator Ryan Press said. "She'll go out to children's hospitals and help teach life safety and fire safety to kids."

Jenna is the third dog awarded to the San Antonio Fire Department by the insurance company.
