Police: Woman's handyman breaks into her home, steals safe with $60,000 and jewelry

Victor Gonzalez, 54, has been taken into police custody

HELOTES, Texas – Helotes police have arrested a man after he allegedly stole from an elderly woman while working as her handyman.

Victor Gonzalez, 54, has been taken into police custody.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Gonzalez allegedly broke into the home back in July and stole the safe from the house office. The affidavit said Gonzalez asked about work and was told exactly when she would be out of town. The safe contained $60,000 in cash along with her passport, birth certificate and several pieces of jewelry, police said.

The affidavit said Gonzalez used the pawned jewelry and stolen cash to buy a black 2013 Chevy Impala and a blue Toyota Matrix. Police identified the stolen jewelry at a pawn shop visited by Gonzalez as the missing pieces.

Gonzalez has been charged with burglary of a habitation.
