BCSO swears in reserve deputies for school pilot program

Reserve deputies will help school districts with student safety

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Sheriff's Office swore in some reserve deputies Thursday for a pilot program aimed at helping school districts protect students.

The program is in partnership with the Southwest and East Central school districts.

The reserve deputies will spend their time keeping an eye on different campuses, help train staff and families on violence prevention and perform risk assessments for each campus.

The extra help is a welcome addition to the school districts.

"I don't think anyone has enough officers to ensure the safety and security of our precious little ones. So anytime we can have an option, an additional resource to enhance and harden those campuses, it's always welcome," said East Central ISD Police Chief George Dranowsky.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says he would like to expand the program to all school districts.
