ACS asks people to consider responsibilities before gifting pets

Puppies, kittens require constant attention

SAN ANTONIO – Animal Care Services is asking people to think long and hard before giving pets as gifts this holiday season.

ACS is not discouraging holiday adoptions, but officials said giving someone a pet that they didn’t pick themselves may not be the best idea.

What makes a good fit varies widely, depending on everyone involved.

“Best bet, make it a day. Come out, and if you're going to give somebody a pet for Christmas, let them come and pick that pet themselves. Come out to a local shelter and look at the animals available and let them choose,” said Lisa Norwood, with ACS.

Puppies and kittens need constant attention and supervision, so the hustle and bustle of the holiday season may not be the best time to introduce a new furry family member into the home for some.
