Fall arrived, and a Hill Country bakery known for handcrafted sweet and savory pies leaned all the way into pumpkin. The spread included pumpkin empanadas, a pumpkin pie, and Pumpkin Butter Cutie Cakes, the little cakes the co-owner iced live in studio, with a bit of a wrestling match against stiff icing. The pumpkin butter is made in house, and so is an apple pie butter, with recipes using both posted weekly on the company’s blog.

Beyond pie by the slice, there are gift options: prebuilt box sets, build-your-own bundles and a dinner-and-dessert combo, which pulls from the savory side of the menu, taco, vegetable and chicken pot pies plus quiches. Gift cards too. The flavor list runs long and includes limited-time seasonal releases. There are two locations, one in Dripping Springs and one in Boerne at 1445 S. Main St., where the case holds slices, cutie cakes, empanadas, pumpkin butter, house coffee and pie servers.

SPIRIT HALLOWEEN SUPERSTORE

The crew turned shopping into a game at the Spirit Halloween Superstore at 10628 Culebra Rd., drawing categories out of a cup and getting one minute each to put together a look. Pop culture produced a Michael Myers mask paired with a denim jacket, which prompted a lengthy defense on camera. Scary, nostalgic, ridiculous and spicy followed, yielding Chucky, a hot dog hat, a clown mask with a pizza topper, and a SWAT commander. The verdict was that the Chucky build won.

The store manager walked through what is moving this year: SpongeBob and friends, Scooby-Doo, Art the Clown, Pennywise, Ghostface and the standard monsters and goblins for adults, K-pop Demon Hunters, Fortnite, Ghostbusters, witches, Gwen from Spider-Man and Minions for kids. Pets get ride-along character costumes, including a Headless Horseman, plus ghost, candy corn and lobster options. Decor includes new animatronics in both spooky and cute, with a returning favorite named Gordo on sale. There are also makeup palettes for Day of the Dead looks, glitter, gore and decals. Store hours vary by location, so the advice was to use the store locator at spirithalloween.com. The chain also collects donations for Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital, with 100% of donations staying local.

BAIRD FOUNDATION REPAIR

This segment was sponsored by Baird Foundation Repair, and the general manager used it to explain why cracked, sinking or uneven concrete usually comes down to one culprit: the soil. South Texas soils are weak and prone to movement, and the cycle of heavy water washing soil out from under a slab followed by heat shrinking what is left leaves the concrete unsupported. A slab, as he put it, behaves like a piece of glass, so it shifts, then breaks.

The company’s fix avoids a tear-out. Polyurethane foam is injected beneath the concrete, compacting the soil and creating stable support, which he framed as a cost-effective alternative to re-pouring onto the same weak ground. Sidewalks, driveways, patios and pool decks can all be evaluated. Inspections are free and carry no obligation at gobairdgo.com or (210) 534-4110, and mentioning SA Live takes $250 off the final proposal.
