As a "Leader in Me" school, one of our goals with our Jr. Lighthouse Team is to raise funds to donate to the American Heart Association. We do so in honor of our former kindergarten student, Henry Lezama, who passed away 4 years ago, as a result of a heart condition he had. For the past 3 years the Jr. Lighthouse Team members promote the "Henry’s Heroes" campaign to raise funds in his honor and students who bring in the most donations earn the titles of King, Queen, Prince, Princess, Duke and Duchess. They get to dress up as royalty and are escorted on student decorated wagons throughout our annual Cinco de Mayo parade, led by an American Heart Association representative who serves as our Grand Marshall. In the past three years, we have raised over $3000 to donate to the American Heart Association. Although we have a high percent of at-risk population, our kids and families always find ways to donate their change to this cause in honor of one of our own.
