Student to Student
Through the Student 2 Student program, students serve as ambassadors with the purpose of welcoming new students to the school, taking them on tours, and sharing information with new students about school activities and programs. We try to help ease the transition and lessen the challenging encounters that can sometimes come along with moving to a new school. The number one priority for ES2S encourages 100% acceptance to all students in this military-connected program. Through the ES2S program we address the four key issues of transitioning students: academics, finding the way, relationships and 100% acceptance.
Students also learn leadership skills and conduct team building activities to help welcome new students and promote an inclusive culture. The S2S Ambassadors are paired up with a new student the very first day they arrive on campus to make sure they are not by themselves during lunch and find all of their classes. In the elementary school, the leadership component comes along at the beginning of the year when teachers nominate one boy and one girl from their classroom to mentor new transitioning students. They welcome them and help them ͞learn the ropes͟ of the new school, sit with them at lunch, play with them at recess, and even present them with a ͞Welcome to Lackland Elementary͟ gift bag.
Elementary Student 2 Student (ES2S) models service and leadership, and engages younger students as peer leaders under faculty direction. The ES2S students meet once a month after school to learn about leadership skills, service learning and work closely with the Junior S2S and High School S2S. Each month the Junior S2S students and the High School ES2S students lead activities for the ES2S group and twice a year we conduct a service learning project. S2S hosts a social every quarter, hold special events during the month of the military child in April, participate in community service activities, and attend the MCEC National Training Seminar in Washington, DC. The whole idea behind S2S is to help new students feel welcome and provide a sense of belonging in a new school environment. Student 2 Student (S2S) is developed by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC).
