Protect your pets from mosquitos, vets say

Mosquitos can give pets heartworm disease

SAN ANTONIO – Mosquitos are more than just pesky bugs. They can also give your pets heartworm disease.

“Mosquitos spread this little worm,” said Dr. Mike Mixon, from Texas Veterinary Hospitals. “The worm grows into about five or six inches long and it lives in the chambers of the heart, as well as in the lungs.”

Mixon said there are mosquitos year-round in San Antonio, which is why prevention is important.

He said you can prevent heartworm disease with a pill, an injection or a droplet -- whatever works best for your pet.
