SAN ANTONIO – The flu season is upon us and the team at HealthTexas wants to make sure you and your family are ready.

Dr. Kristi Clark, medical director from HealthTexas has answered some of the questions viewers asked on social media about the flu and what to expect.

If you have more specific questions, there are 17 HealthTexas locations around the San Antonio area where medical professionals can answer your questions.

Question 1: Why do I need to get the flu shot?

"The most important advice is to get your flu vaccination," Dr. Clark said. "Even though it's not 100 percent, it's the sole best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu and symptoms of the flu."

Question 2: How early should I get a flu shot?

"You should get the flu shot now, "Dr. Clark said. "One of the things about the flu season is that it's a bit unpredictable. Last year we had one of the worst flu seasons we've ever seen. Sometimes the flu season can come on earlier."

Question 3: Do people really get sick once they get the flu shot?

"The flu vaccine takes two weeks to take full effect," Dr. Clark said. "When you take the flu vaccine, your immune system makes antibodies and sometimes these antibodies can create low grade fevers, or make you have muscle pain. You're really not having the flu, you're having a reaction to your body working for the flu."
