SAN ANTONIO - You know them for their Japanese fusion flavor, but did you know that Sushi Zushi was started right here in the Alamo City?

President and founder Alfonso Tomita created the successful restaurant chain after a recommendation from his son in 2001.

“I was thinking about doing a quesadilla concept from Mexico,” said Tomita. “But he really insisted, ‘You gotta do sushi! You gotta do sushi!’”

Since its start, Sushi Zushi gained popularity for its unique flavor combinations, and its willingness to push the boundaries on what a Sushi restaurant should be.

“We have not only the traditional Japanese sushi, but we have sushi that is very appealing to the San Antonians and especially to the Texans.”

Sixteen years later, they’re still creating bold new dishes that highlight Alfonso’s roots in Mexico City.

Their newest addition, the deep fried tuna poppers, are an example of how they’re still having fun while creating food that still fits on a sushi restaurant menu.
