SAN ANTONIO – In 1971, President Richard Nixon proclaimed National Moon Landing Day on July 20 to commemorate the anniversary of man’s first moon landing, according to NationalDayCalendar.com.

As the first people to walk the moon, American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are household names.

Apollo 11 carried the men, along with fellow astronaut Michael Collins, to the moon, where they landed on July 20, 1969.

Moon Facts from Space.com:

• The moon was created when a rock the size of Mars slammed into Earth, according to the leading theory.
• Earthlings always see the same side of the moon due to the rotations of the earth and moon.
• The moon is one of the Earth’s two natural satellites. The other is a 3-mile-wide asteroid called Cruithne.
The moons craters are a result of an intense pummeling by giant space rocks 3.8 to 4.1 billion years ago.
• The moon isn’t actually spherical. It’s egg shaped.
• The ocean’s tides are caused by the moon.
