When The US entered World War II, Kelly Field’s primary function became one of maintenance and supply. With men leaving for combat, the workforce quickly grew from 1,000 to 20,000, many of whom were women known as “Kelly Katies” - San Antonio’s version of “Rosie the Riveter”.
