Countdown begins -- South San Antonio ISD to reopen 3 campuses in fall 2019

Athens Elementary, Kazen Middle, West Campus coming

SAN ANTONIO

Summer's long, hot days are upon us and that means only one thing for San Antonio-area school districts: preparation for the upcoming school year.

From developing curriculum to planning professional development training, the district's staff is hard at work. South San Antonio ISD is among the area's school districts revving up for mid-August when teachers arrive and students aren't far behind.

With the added element of three campuses reopening in the fall and a theme for the year that captures the essence of the community, there's a palpable buzz at the district offices.

"Our administration is committed to preparing students for success and supporting our community. With the reopenings, we've had a lot of support from the community. We're also excited about this year's theme, 'We are Family' because our district includes multi-generational families who have attended our schools over the years. Our community cares about each other. There's a lot of pride in South San."

- Jennifer Suniga Collier, public information officer at South San ISD

Athens Elementary, Kazen Middle, and West Campus are currently undergoing renovations and will provide new options for students and families.

  • Athens Elementary will become the area's first "Community School." In addition to providing a strong academic foundation, this unique model includes wrap-around services to assist in educating the whole family.

  • Kazen Middle will incorporate a variety of unique opportunities for students designed to build their character and leadership development, civic responsibility and community service as part of a child's education.

  • West Campus will provide freshman students with an academic foundation focused on core subjects. Smaller class sizes and transportation to South San High School for extra-curricular and other programs create a unique learning environment.
