According to the American Red Cross, people cannot get the flu from a blood transfusion. The organization says on its website that the flu does not pose a "significant contamination" to the blood.

However, those who donate blood should still take precautions.

Before donating blood, make sure you feel healthy. If you have recently had the flu, make sure you are free of symptoms before donating.

Before donating blood follow all other recommendations, such as drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy meal before donating.
