SAN ANTONIO – Spurs backup point guard Patty Mills, who was instrumental in the Spurs championship run this season against the Miami Heat, will miss up to the next seven months after a tear in his rotator cuff of his right shoulder was discovered in a physical for the Australian National Team.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Mills will have surgery in the coming days.

Mills reportedly played through the pain during the Spurs run for their fifth NBA Championship, but scans revealed the tear just two weeks after averaging 15.5 points in Games 4 and 5 against Miami.

Australia is set to compete at the 2014 FIBA World Cup and Mills is shattered by the news.

The injury means Mills will miss Australia's best chance to win a medal in a major international tournament, plus he will miss the start of the NBA regular season.

He would not be available to play until 2015.

Mills, 25, made $1.13 million last season and became an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, which means he can sign with any NBA team.

And after his performance in the NBA Finals against Miami, Mills was set to make the biggest payday of his career.

It is unclear at this time how will it affect the offers he receives from the Spurs or other teams.
