Hungary's Hosszu wins 3rd gold in 4 days

4th gold would put her in elite company

Hungary's Katinka Hosszu continued her Olympic resurgence Tuesday night, winning gold in the 200-meter individual medley for her third gold at the Rio Games in four days.

After competing in three Olympics without winning a single medal, the 27-year-old Hosszu set up Tuesday night's gold by winning the 400m individual medley on Saturday night and the 100m backstroke Monday night.

Hosszu joined the likes of Shane Gould, Janet Evans, Kornelia Ender and Inge de Bruijn as triple gold medalists in individual events in a single Games.

And she still has the 200m backstroke yet to go in Rio. If she wins, she'll tie East German Kristin Otto’s mark of four individual golds.

American Maya DiRado won bronze while Siobhan-Marie O’Connor of Great Britain won silver.

Appearing in her first, and what she says will be her last, Olympics, DiRado has already made a big impression, winning silver in the 400-meter individual medley on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old Northern California native and Stanford graduate plans to retire after she's done competing in Rio and begin work as a business analyst for a management consulting firm in Atlanta.

Before then, she still has one event to go: the 200-meter backstroke beginning on Thursday.

Melanie Margalis, the 24-year-old former Georgia Bulldog, finished in fourth place.

American Missy Franklin, the 2012 Olympic champion in the event, did not qualify at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June to defend her gold in Rio.
