Dmitriy Balandin of Kazakhstan upset the Americans Kevin Cordes and Josh Prenot to win the gold in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke Wednesday.
Prenot won the silver.
Cordes, a 22-year-old Illinois native, is swimming in his first Olympics and finished fourth Sunday night in the 100-meter breaststroke, his first Olympic final.
Cordes, who came into Rio as the American record holder in the both the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke, will also likely be part of the 4x100-meter medley relay team for the U.S. on Friday and Saturday.
Prenot, a 23-year-old Missouri native also swimming in his first Olympics, swam the third-fastest time in the semis on Tuesday to advance. Cordes was fifth in those same semis, both of them behind Japan's Ippei Watanabe's Olympic record time of 2:07.22.
