US goes for gold in men's individual sabre

Szilagyi beats American 15-8

Fencer Daryl Homer did not win the gold for the U.S. in men's individual sabre Wednesday in Rio.

Hungary's Aron Szilagyi beat him by a score of 15-8 in the gold medal bout.

Homer, ranked 10th in the world in sabre, went through Germany's Matyas Szabo by a score of 15-12 in the quarters, then beat Mojtaba Abedini of Iran 15-14 to reach the final bout.

Kim Jung-hwan of South Korea beat Abedini in the bronze medal match.

Homer, 26, was born on the Caribbean island of St. Thomas and raised in the Bronx. He took up fencing at the age of 11 after seeing a picture of a masked fencer in a dictionary and went on to become a four-time NCAA All-American fencer at St. John's University.

This is the second Olympics for Homer after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2012 London Games.

Since then, Homer has made a name for himself in the sport, including becoming the first American man to medal in sabre at the Senior World Championships when he took silver in 2015.
