SAN ANTONIO – NBA Hall-of-Famer and San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson will replace Michael Irvin at the Salvation Army of San Antonio’s annual luncheon on May 9.

The Salvation Army canceled Irvin’s appearance after a Florida woman accused the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver of sexual assault.

"Because of the programs we run and the services that we provide to women and families in need, we believe this is just not the right time to partner with Mr. Irvin while an investigation of this nature is pending,” Brad Mayhar, public relations manager for the Salvation Army of San Antonio, said at the time of Irvin’s cancellation.

Mayhar said however that the organization was elated that Robinson — better known to fans as “the Admiral” — agreed to step in on such a short notice.

“We’re thrilled that Mr. Robinson was very understanding of our dilemma and agreed to participate in our luncheon,” Mayhar said Tuesday.  “He is one of the most popular members in the history of the San Antonio Spurs, and you could argue that there might not be a more universally beloved member of our community.

According to Mayhar, the luncheon, sponsored by Valero Energy Foundation, marks a celebration of the Salvation Army’s 128th year in San Antonio, and is one of the organization’s biggest annual fundraisers. He said all money raised supports programs benefiting local families in need.
