The San Antonio Spurs selected Colorado point guard Derrick White in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft.

The pick marks the second consecutive year the Spurs have selected a point guard in the first round of the draft.

White, a 6'5 combo-guard, averaged just over 18 points, 4.4 assists and four rebounds per game last season.

He was named first team All Pac-12 following his only season at Colorado.

White is an older guard coming into the league after he began his collegiate career at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, a Division II school.

White said he only received a junior college and a partial scholarship out of high school.

"It was humbling at times and made me work harder just to keep that chip on my shoulder, and just continue to never be satisfied,” White said.

White said he has not been to San Antonio many times but is an open book and ready to learn from the current group of players.

“It’s crazy to be a part of Spurs organization. They have great history and coach Popovich has done an amazing job there, and I just want to get there and join the Spurs way,” White said.

He described the moment he received the call from the Spurs that he would be a first round draft pick.

"It was surreal, still probably hasn’t hit yet," White said.

Various reports throughout the day indicated the Spurs could attempt to move into the top 10 of the draft, but San Antonio selected White at the team's predetermined No. 29 spot.
