Scholar Athlete: Destini Salas, Holy Cross

What are you most excited about for your senior year and why?

I'm most excited about all the "last times" I'll experience with my classmates. I've grown up with them since middle school, so it'll be a little heartbreaking but worth while.

What drives you to be successful in the classroom and in your particular sport?

What drives me to be successful in everything I do is my family. I have two dedicated, hard-working and self-sacrificing parents. I'm also the eldest sister to three amazing siblings, Daisi, R.J. and J.R., each of which look up to and depend on me setting the right example. Every one of my family members, including my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and closest friends, love and support me unconditionally. They'd sacrifice anything and everything to see me succeed. "How could I not?"

What advice would you give other student athletes on how to succeed on the field, in the classroom and remain close to family?

To always remember and appreciate the people who sacrifice to help us succeed because those are our "family members." We sometimes become so accustomed to them doing those things, that we forget they're not obligated to do that for us. Also, to always thank every single person who takes the time to come and watch us do what we love, whether it's just once or every time.

What do you like best about the high school you attend?

The best part about the school I attend is that I'm blessed to see and walk the same hallways as my family every single day. My dad teaches and coaches on campus. And attending Holy Cross alongside me, are my two siblings, Daisi (11th) and R.J. (6th), as well as cousins, Analisa Cervantes and A.J. Ortiz (12th), Carolann Bustos (11th), Yesenia Casarez and Jeric Ortiz (10th), Eduardo Saldaña (8th), and George Casarez (6th). But I also can't let the fact that our faith is priority in our school and education go unrecognized. Being able to freely talk, pray, learn, and attend Mass at school is something I greatly appreciate. It helps me in continuing to deepen my faith and guides me in making the best moral decisions.

Where do you want to attend college, major in and why?

I really enjoy speaking and meeting new people, so although I'm undecided on the university I'd like to attend, I plan to major in mass communications, more specifically public relations/ advertising.

If you could have one superhero power, what would it be and why?

One superpower I'd wish to have is the ability to control time. I'd stop it to accomplish more in a single day, fast forward through the dull moments, and/or get extra time to enjoy those special occasions that no one wants to end.

If you could take any athlete or celebrity to your senior prom, who would it be and why?

I'd choose Bruno Mars because I'm a huge fan and LOVE his music. I think prom would be the perfect setting to meet and hang out with him.
