ALAMO HEIGHTS, Texas – The Alamo Heights football team will host Somerset Friday night in KSAT 12’s BGC Game of the Week, an early-season non-district matchup between two area powers.
Alamo Heights enters Week 2 ranked No. 5 in Class 5A in the latest edition of KSAT 12’s Top 12, while Somerset checked in at No. 3 in KSAT’s Sub-5A rankings.
“We have our hands full with these guys,” Somerset head coach Koy Detmer said. “These guys are coming off of a big win over Pieper, and we knew coming into the season this was going to be one of those games. We’re looking for that challenge.”
The Mules are coming off a dominant Week 1 win over Pieper, a season opener that came with challenges beyond the field. Like several teams across South Central Texas, Alamo Heights dealt with weather delays as storms disrupted the opening week of the high school football season.
“You want to experience everything during the regular season, and a weather delay is included in that,” Alamo Heights first-year head coach Rudy Nerio said. “You figure out how much focus you have when things are out of your control.”
Alamo Heights waited through a roughly 2 1/2-hour weather delay before finishing the game — overcoming the drop in energy that can come with an extended stoppage.
“We’ve got a lot of young guys on the team this year, and I think for them, having a victory early on gives them a little bit of confidence and helps us continue on to do our best,” Mules senior left tackle Ben Pitamber said.
“Momentum is a huge game changer, and we’re not really worried about what Somerset’s doing right now,” Alamo Heights senior outside linebacker Wendell Cone said. “We’re just going to practice the same way we’ve been practicing, prepare the same way we’ve been preparing and we know we can go out there and do our thing.”
Now, Nerio’s program turns its attention to Somerset as the Mules continue building towards district play.
The Bulldogs will be a strong, early-season measuring stick for Alamo Heights and a chance for both teams to sharpen up in a high-profile non-district matchup.
“I feel like we’re just building chemistry by the day, and we just want to dominate, get to the playoffs and go to state,” Bulldogs senior cornerback Kaden Isbell said. “That’s the goal, and we love each other.”
Somerset played just one half of football Friday night because of weather delays. The Bulldogs led rival Southside 14-8 when their game was called.
“We learned how explosive we can be and how good we really are with our playmakers,” Somerset senior quarterback Adrian Buentello said. “We didn’t do anything too fancy. We just got our playmakers the ball in space.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Orem Stadium. KSAT 12 Sports will have extended coverage of the matchup later that evening on the Nightbeat.
