Trinity football pulls away from Berry College in top-15 conference matchup

SAN ANTONIO – No. 9 Trinity remained unbeaten Saturday with a 23-6 victory over No. 11 Berry College in a Division III football matchup that could carry major weight in the Southern Athletic Association race.

The Tigers (5-0) scored 16 unanswered points to cement the win.

Trinity struck first late in the first quarter when La Vernia alum Colton Schmid caught a pass from Welker Horn, shed a tackle and raced into the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown.

It was Schmid’s only reception of the game, but it gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

Berry (3-1) answered with a big play of its own. Andrew Hunter connected with junior wide receiver Cameron Coleman on a 65-yard touchdown pass.

The Vikings missed the 2-point attempt, keeping Trinity ahead 7-6.

The Tigers quickly regained momentum after a 76-yard kick return set up favorable field position. Hondo Franklin then found Johnson alum Alejandro Tavarez for an 18-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked, but Trinity remained in front.

From there, Trinity’s defense held Berry scoreless while the offense added to the lead.
