Reagan basketball coach John Hirst rings the bell, completes prostate cancer treatment

“Time to get back to work,” John Hirst wrote. “Strike ’em.”

SAN ANTONIO – Reagan High School head basketball coach John Hirst is celebrating a major win off the court after completing his final radiation treatment for prostate cancer at UT MD Anderson.

Hirst marked the milestone by ringing the bell, surrounded by his family and care team, according to posts shared on X.

In the posts, Hirst thanked his family, friends, the Reagan community, medical staff and especially Dr. Tran for supporting him through treatment.

He also used the moment to encourage other men to take their health seriously, urging them to know their PSA number and get checked early. Hirst said early detection matters.

A PSA test measures prostate-specific antigen in the blood and is commonly used as a screening tool for prostate cancer.

Now that treatment is complete, Hirst said he is ready to return his focus to coaching.

“Time to get back to work,” Hirst wrote. “Strike ’em.”
