BGC Preview 2018: Wagner vs Brackenridge

Undefeated Thunderbirds face tough district test against hungry Eagles

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – One of the big games in our Big Game Coverage Friday night on KSAT 12 will feature the Wagner Thunderbirds against the Brackenridge Eagles.

This is the T-Birds’ first time in District 13-5A Division I after dropping down from 6A due to enrollment, and so far it has been a great move for Wagner.

The Thunderbirds sport a 4-1 overall record at the halfway mark of the 2018 season and are currently undefeated in district play, at 3-0.

Their only loss this season came against top-ranked Judson in the Hammer Bowl.

”It’s a very tough opponent coming up,” Wagner senior slotback Karlton Black said. “We know they have a rich tradition. They’ve won multiple district championships, so we’re ready to play and we know they’re prepared, especially with them coming off a loss.”

The Eagles enter this matchup on the heels of their first district loss - a 28-2 decision to Veterans Memorial. As a result, Brackenridge is now 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in district play.

“It’s honestly a big motivation,” said Brackenridge senior outside linebacker Isaac Anaya. “We really took that loss to heart and it was a loss that shouldn’t have happened. But it happened. It’s in the past, and now we’re over it and ready to just focus on Wagner.”

There is no question in this meeting that these two teams have nothing but respect for one another.

“They’re very dangerous,” Wagner senior linebacker Gregory Steptoe said. “They’ve been looking forward to playing us, so we know it’s going to be a hard-fought game.  We’re ready to come out and show what we’ve got.”

“The two best teams in the district going head-to-head," Brackenridge senior defensive lineman Samuel Lopez said. ”It’s going to be a pretty good game.”

We will find out on Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the SAISD Sports Complex next to Burbank High School.
