Hemphill said he spoke to his family about the position and determined that the time was right for him to take on a new career challenge after 30 years as a coach.
Hemphill has been the head football coach at Stevens for the last four seasons.
He had a 26-18 overall record with the Falcons and qualified for the playoffs twice, advancing to the second rounds in 2014 and 2015.
Hemphill was also the head football coach at O’Connor High School. He replaces Hector Rodriguez who was recently hired as the new athletic director at Central Catholic High School.
