Houston-area school district to unveil $70 million football stadium

Katy ISD to dedicate Legacy Stadium during ceremony Thursday night

KATY, Texas – Football is big in Texas and so is the price tag for Katy Independent School District's new mega-stadium.

The district on Thursday night will unveil its new stadium that cost a whopping $70 million to build.

The stadium made headlines over the past few years for its large price tag.

When voters approved new stadium construction in 2014, the estimated cost was $58 million. But in 2016, the price tag grew to $70 million.

The school district said the stadium will serve more than 77,000 students and community members.

Athletic and fine arts teams from eight high schools are among those who will benefit from the stadium, officials said.

The facility's name is Legacy Stadium, while the field itself was named for Mike Johnston, who led the Katy Tigers to three state football titles in seven years.

The official dedication ceremony will include special performances by high school bands and choir directors.
