HOUSTON - There has been a lot of chatter about what the Houston Texans need to fix prior to the start of the 2019 season, but one position of strength is running back, led by 2018 Pro Bowler Lamar Miller.

Miller has been Mr. Reliable since arriving in Houston prior to the 2016 season, tallying at least 850 yards in each of his three seasons with the Texans. Miller rushed for 973 yards last season, averaging exactly eight yards per carry, his highest average since joining the Texans.

The ninth-year back points to his preparation last offseason as the reason for his 2018 productivity. Miller says he's following the same regimen this offseason.

"What I did in the offseason last year helped me be more explosive," Miller said. "I'm going to try and continue doing what I did last year and just try to continue to help the team in any way I can."

The Texans prefer to use a running back by committee approach, but Miller was forced to carry much of the load by himself last season after D'Onta Foreman missed all but one regular-season game while recovering from a torn Achilles. Miller believes that the assemblage of talent could make the Texans a very potent offense this season.

"All around on the offensive side of the ball, we can be an explosive group. We've got a great quarterback in Deshaun (Watson) and he's been doing a great job of communicating and leading the offense," Miller said. "We've got play makers at the receiver position, at tight end and at running back."

Miller also hopes to be used in the passing game more. He says he's been working on his route running and believes he can be a valuable weapon for Watson.

"I feel like that is something that I can help this team do," Miller said. "Heading into training camp, I'm just going to work on route running and my speed so I can be in the best position to make big plays."

The Texans will wrap up minicamp Thursday. The team will report for training camp July 25.
