Alphabet names new board member in wake of CEO change

Scientist Frances Arnold, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, smiles at a celebratory press conference at Caltech on October 3, 2018 in Pasadena, California. Alphabet said on Monday that it's added acclaimed biologist Frances Arnold to its board of directors. The appointment comes days after Google CEO Sundar Pichai succeeded Larry Page as Alphabet CEO. Alphabet is aggressively pushing into the renewable energy and health sectors, and needs professional credibility in those areas as it tries to beat back concerns about its trustworthiness in collecting and using personal data. Arnold won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018 as well as notable prizes for her work in renewable energy.

US, Japanese scientists share Nobel Prize in Chemistry

US, Japanese scientists share Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on improving battery technology. STOCKHOLM, Sweden - The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham, and Akira Yoshino for their research in improving battery technology. The trio will share the prize for their work on "the development of lithium-ion batteries," according to the Nobel committee. "Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized our lives and are used in everything from mobile phones to laptops and electric vehicles," tweeted the committee. "Through their work, this year's Chemistry Laureates have laid the foundation of a wireless, fossil fuel-free society," it added.

Nobel week continues with the Chemistry Prize

STOCKHOLM - The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced Wednesday, a day after the Physics award was given to a Canadian-American cosmologist and two Swiss scientists. And on Thursday come two literature laureates, while the coveted Nobel Peace Prize is Friday and the economics award on Monday. The 2018 literature prize was suspended after a scandal rocked the Swedish Academy. Prize founder Alfred Nobel a Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite decided the physics, chemistry, medicine and literature prizes should be awarded in Stockholm, and the peace prize in Oslo. The economics prize officially known as the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel wasn't created by Nobel, but by Riksbanken, Sweden's central bank, in 1968.

Chemistry Nobel shared by 2 Americans and 1 Japanese researcher

Goran Hansson, secretary general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, said the prize was about "a rechargeable world." Prize founder Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist who invented dynamite, decided the physics, chemistry, medicine and literature prizes should be awarded in Stockholm, and the peace prize in Oslo. Americans William G. Kaelin Jr. and Gregg L. Semenza and Britain's Peter J. Ratcliffe won the Nobel Prize for advances in physiology or medicine on Monday. Two literature laureates are to be announced Thursday, because last year's award was suspended after a scandal rocked the Swedish Academy. The coveted Nobel Peace Prize is Friday and the economics award on Monday.
