(AP Photo/Pavel Golovkin, file)LAUSANNE โ With Russiaโs name banned from the next two Olympics, the country's team and athletes will be officially branded as โROC,โ the International Olympic Committee said Friday. The team name โ an acronym for Russian Olympic Committee โ has been agreed on by the IOC and the World Anti-Doping Agency, which has accused the country of running a state-backed doping program. Russiaโs team name, flag and national anthem were banned from this yearโs Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Russian team flag in Tokyo and Beijing will be the ROC symbol โ an Olympic flame in the white, blue and red stripes of the national flag above the five Olympic rings. โThe Russian Olympic Committee will submit a proposed musical score to be played for all ceremonies,โ the IOC said.
'Cover up of cover-up' still led to downsized Russian ban
WADA had proposed a four-year ban for Russia for manipulating potentially inculpatory data it held in its Moscow lab for years before handing it over to investigators early in 2019. Still, CAS called for more lenient terms than WADA wanted, lowering the burden for Russian athletes to gain eligibility to compete as neutrals at the upcoming games in Tokyo and Beijing and softening a proposed ban on Russian government officials. The panel said it cut the sanction in part because WADA only ever intended the ban to include one Summer and one Winter Olympics. For instance, one of Russia's biggest victories was the loosening of conditions for Russian athletes to compete as neutrals. WADA had insisted athletes be able to prove they hadn't been implicated in Russia's non-compliance.
Sports court opens 4-day hearing in Russian doping case

The Court of Arbitration for Sport judges will start on Monday Nov. 2, 2020, hearing evidence about a manipulated database from the Moscow testing laboratory. The case centers on a Moscow testing laboratory database that was long sealed by Russian state authorities before being handed over to WADA investigators last year. The Russian anti-doping agency has not accepted being ruled non-compliant last December, nor accepted a slate of punishments proposed by WADAโs executive committee. Russian officials have denied wrongdoing and blamed a western conspiracy to stop Russian athletes competing at major sports events.

(AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein, File)TOKYO The Tokyo Olympics are already the most expensive Summer Games on record with costs set to go higher, a wide-ranging study from Britain's University of Oxford indicates. Tracking Olympic costs is difficult, a dense maze of overlap and debate. Flyvbjerg writes: Unfortunatley, Olympics officials and hosts often misinform about the costs and cost overruns of the Games. This study also found Olympic cost overruns but said they were in line with other large-scale projects.
Cold War rivalries split the Olympics in Moscow in 1980
Here are some of the highlights of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. The Cold War made for decades of tense Olympic battles between the United States and the Soviet Union. Four years later, the Soviet Union boycotted the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles as retaliation. The Soviet war in Afghanistan rumbled on through the 1980 Olympics. Barely a decade later, the Soviet Union would be a thing of the past as it fractured into 15 newly independent countries.
Qatar interested in bidding for 2032 Olympics, Paralympics
Qatar is keen on on hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Qatar is turning its focus to bringing the Summer Games to the Middle East for the first time as it prepares to host the region's first World Cup in 2022. An interest in bidding for the Olympics comes as Qatar continues to face corruption allegations over how it won the rights to host the World Cup in a FIFA vote in December 2010. FIFA had to move the World Cup from its usual June-July slot to November-December 2022 due to the desert countrys fierce summer heat. The next Summer Olympics are the rescheduled Tokyo Games in 2021, followed by Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.
Track group calls for change of Olympic protest rule
The IOC earlier this year reiterated its support of the rule that restricts protests inside the lines at the games. But in the aftermath of protests that stemmed from George Floyd's killing in May, the committee said it would consider measures that would allow athletes to make stronger protests. Among the board members signing off on the statement are Allyson Felix, Christian Taylor, Emma Coburn, Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Berry was an outspoken critic of the USOPC earlier this year when it made public shows of solidarity with Black athletes, suggesting the USOPC never reached out to her on the issue. The USOPC has formed an athletes' group to look into ways to combat racism, which could include calling for changes in the rule known as Rule 50.

TOKYO The 42 venues for next years delayed Tokyo Olympics have been secured and the competition schedule will remain almost identical to the one that would have been used this year. The Athletes Village and the main press center have also been lined up for 2021. That was the message delivered Friday to IOC members by Tokyo organizing committee President Yoshiro Mori and CEO Toshiro Muto. However, women's softball and soccer will open on July 21, men's soccer on July 22, and archery and rowing on July 23. IOC President Thomas Bach said earlier this week that multiple scenarios are being thought about to pull off the Olympics next year.
Q&A: State of Tokyo Olympics 2 1/2 months after postponement
TOKYO It's been 2 1/2 months since the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The IOC executive board meets on Wednesday and will hear a brief presentation from Tokyo organizers on a remote hookup, explaining where things stand. Pierre Ducrey, Olympic Games operations director, said last week that retaining the Olympic Village was problem No. A: No matter where the Olympics are held, or in what city, most Olympic venues look much the same on television. Bach earlier this year warned against using the Tokyo Olympics as a platform for highlighting political and social causes.
