SAN ANTONIO โ In the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic last summer, Rebekah Garcia had a passion to create something unique and beautiful that would bring some joy into peopleโs lives. Garcia started creating backdrops out of different materials that she calls streamers. It started with her decorating for her daughterโs small birthday party at home and then creating another backdrop for close friends. โThose people referred me and some of my friends and thatโs how it started,โ Garcia said. โLife is going to go on and you really have the power to choose how you want to move forward and I would say thatโs really empowered me,โ Garcia said.
All adults in Texas are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. But there still arenโt enough doses for everyone.
People waited for hours to receive COVID-19 vaccine doses last month at the Fair Park vaccination site in Dallas. Starting Monday, all Texans ages 16 and older โ about 22 million people โ are eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccine doses, the Texas Department of State Health Services announced. But as vaccine eligibility expands, actually getting the vaccine may be even more difficult. Texas has administered more than 10 million vaccine doses, and the state will receive more than 1 million first doses this week, according to DSHS. For Texans who do not have access to transportation or the ability to navigate technology, signing up for a vaccine appointment is nearly impossible.
Texas hits 2 million vaccine doses administered
San Antonio โ More than two million vaccine doses have been administered in Texas so far, according to the Department of State Health Servicesโ statistics on Thursday. The stateโs data shows nearly 1.7 million people have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 370,000 of them were fully vaccinated. However, the chairwoman of the stateโs Emergency Vaccine Allocation Panel, DSHS Associate Commissioner Ismelda Garcia, said sheโs still not satisfied with the doses. AdGarcia said the stateโs recurring first dose vaccine allocation is expected to go up from about 333,000 doses this week to about 385,000 next week. AdThe EVAP continues to discuss who will be part of the next group eligible for the vaccine, Garcia said, and the timeline for when that group will become eligible will depend largely on vaccine supply.

SAN ANTONIO โ A San Antonio woman says a breast exam led doctors to discover she had COVID-19, even though she wasnโt showing any symptoms. Joanne Garcia discovered a lump in her breast earlier this year and underwent several exams. โI actually went in to get a breast CT scan, so they could try and see where the cancer is,โ Garcia said. โShe goes, โI canโt see anything visible with your breast cancer on the CT scan because you have COVID lungs. โLuckily, because her lung reserve is tremendous because of her singing career, she had no shortness of breath,โ said Dr. Maryam Elmi, breast surgical oncologist at UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Judge orders replacement of clerks, threatens legal action against district clerk if not done by Monday
SAN ANTONIO โ On Thursday, 399th District Court Judge Frank Castro issued an order noting that deputy district clerks assigned to district courts serve at the pleasure of the judges. The order concluded by threatening to hold Bexar County District Clerk Mary Angie Garcia in contempt of court is she did not replace two clerks assigned to his court by Monday. Castro had requested the transfer earlier, according to Garcia. We would do what we had to do,โ Garcia said. โWeโre just trying to make it a smooth operational office,โ Garcia said.
2 face federal firearms charges in connection with 2019 murder-suicide in Devine
SAN ANTONIO โ A 26-year-old San Antonio man and a 44-year-old Devine woman are facing federal firearms charges in connection with a June 2019 murder-suicide in Devine, federal officials said. The protective order, which was issued in May 2019 after Jaramillo stabbed his intimate partner, Jessica Sanchez, prohibited him from having contact with Sanchez, officials said. According to the indictment, Jaramillo, with Garciaโs help, shot and killed Sanchez on June 30, 2019, using the firearm illegally acquired by Vega. After killing Sanchez, Jaramillo turned the firearm on himself and committed suicide. The case is being investigated as Project Guardian, an initiative started in November 2019 aimed to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws across the country.

Man sentenced to 6 years in drunken driving death
SAN ANTONIO โ A San Antonio man has been sentenced to six years in prison in the intoxication manslaughter death of a 66-year-old man. In addition to his time in prison, Maycott will be assessed a $10,000 fine. "He was supposed to walk me down aisle," Garcia sobbed, as she testified in the punishment phase of Maycott's trial. Maycott, 25, plead guilty to intoxication manslaughter charges. "I know that there is nothing I can to do bring back your loved one," Maycott testified.
