Children treated for gunshot wounds at San Antonio hospitals increase during stay-at-home orders
SAN ANTONIO When the stay-at-home orders were issued at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there were fears that more time spent indoors for families would result in an increase in various child injuries. The most alarming statistic is the number of children injured by gunshot wounds, which caught the eye of University Healths Pediatric Trauma Medical Director, Dr. Lillian Liao. In 2019, there were three children injured by gunshot wounds in March and two in April. In 2020 during the stay-at-home orders, there were six children shot in March and another nine shot in April. Apparently, so many parents did abide by the quarantine order that the number traumas caused by vehicle crashes declined dramatically.
