Woman killed in wrong-way crash in Southwest Bexar County

17-year-old girl hit by vehicle taken to hospital in critical condition

SAN ANTONIO – A woman is dead after driving the wrong way on Interstate 35 in Southwest Bexar County overnight.

The incident was reported just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Kinney Road.

James Keith, spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, said a 57-year-old woman in a Hyundai Sonata was driving south in the northbound lanes when she crashed head on into a Nissan Maxima.

Keith said the woman driving the Sonata died minutes later. A 17-year-old girl driving the Maxima suffered critical injuries and was flown to University Hospital, Keith said. 

Keith added its also believed that the woman who caused the crash had been drinking.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the deceased woman's name once family notification has been made.
