Drivers killed in wrong-way crash identified

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the two drivers killed in a wrong-way crash on the city's Northeast Side Sunday night.

Steven Long, 54, and Johnny Hernandez, 34, were killed during a head-on collision between a Toyota Camry and a van on the access road of Walzem Road and Interstate 35 around 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

Both drivers died at the scene as a result of the impact.

Police said Long was traveling southbound on the northbound access road when he hit Hernandez's vehicle at an intersection.

The three people inside the Camry at the time of the crash -- a woman and two children -- suffered injuries and were taken to University Hospital where they are all expected to recover.

A wrong-way crash on the city's Northeast Side killed two people and sent three people to the hospital, San Antonio police said Monday.

The accident occurred on Walzem Road and Interstate 35 around 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

Police said the wrong-way driver is to blame for the accident. They believe the driver of a van hit a Toyota Camry with multiple occupants in it.

Both drivers died at the scene.

The three people in the Camry were taken to University Hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
